Cut about 1897 by ATF in roman and italic. Shown a few years later as Lining Cushing No. 2. BB&S had a copy of the roman under the name Custer; in 1925 it was reissued as Bookman Lightface. [McGrew] Used already in 1896.

Cushing (No. 2), Cushing Antique, Cushing Oldstyle (No. 2), and Cushing Monotone are all distinct typefaces sometimes credited to prominent printer Josiah Stearns Cushing, but he was more likely directing the designs rather than executing them. [McGrew]
