Created by Marcel Jacno for the visual identity of Jean Vilar’s
Théâtre National Populaire (TNP) in c. 1948–1951 and also used for
the Festival d’Avignon. Inspired by the stencil letters that are
frequently found on the material crates of touring theaters
[Corpus
typographique français]. Named after the Palais de Chaillot in
Paris where the TNP’s company had its base [Mosley].
A version with lowercase characters was produced by Deberny &
Peignot for their Typophane transfer sheets and released in
1954.
