Print Isn’t Dead magazine, Element 004 issue

People of Print is the world’s largest online directory of independent designers working with print. Based in England, the initiative has been supporting, providing and celebrating print design creatively, industriously and in education for over fourteen years.

In addition to a hardback book and the Posterzine magazine in A1 poster format, People of Print also published a more conventional magazine that celebrates all forms of printmaking. According to founder Marcroy Smith, it was named Print Isn’t Dead as a reaction and response to the phrase “print isn’t dead”, which was famously used by Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters. Smith:

The essence of our magazine is to showcase the vast and varied uses of print. It is all around us. We like to showcase unusual methods of printing and the ways that traditional methods of print are still used today in contemporary art and design practises.

Print Isn’t Dead is printed using different spot colors and features something special each time, for instance a limited run of screen printed covers. In terms of typography, the magazine uses different typefaces from independent type foundries for each issue.

For the fourth issue titled Element 004, designer James Lunn chose Stratos. The typeface by Production Type is used throughout the issue. The magazine was printed by Pressision Ltd in Leeds, using offset litho (CMYK) together with a special fluorescent spot color, Pantone 802U. Jon Bland provided the full-color cover design. Among the featured artists, designers and printmakers are Anthony Burrill, Alan Kitching, David Wolske, Roderick Mills, Marion Deuchars, Protein, Letterform Live, 99U, and Live Surface.
