Ristorante Pizzeria Ca’ d’Oro
The Ca’ d’Oro (Golden House) is a palace on the Grand Canal in Venice – but it’s also a pizza place in Munich. One difference between the two Ca d’Oros is the number of apostrophes: The original one in Italy sports two (though they probably don’t have a sign in Cooper Black on their façade). For reasons unknown, the second one was omitted from this sign (and, judging by the spacing, has not fallen off, but was never present in the first place). Maybe it’s because they didn’t find a way to create such an elegant ligature as they did between the right-hand foot of ‘A’ and the first apostrophe. Not that Cooper Black isn’t still nice to look at by itself, but the shape of the tubes creates an interesting second layer that gives this well-known typeface an additional dimension. A second difference between the two Ca’s is that the one in Munich serves excellent calzone (or so I’m told).
