The World Exhibition of Photography was devised by Austrian Karl Pawek, inspired by Edward Steichen’s earlier The Family of Man (1955). Pawek (1906–1983) was the editor of the German Magnum magazine, and contributor to Stern magazine, which also organized the exhibitions. The first exhibition under the theme What is Man? (Was ist der Mensch?) was shown in 1964 in 30 countries. There were catalog editions at least in German, English, French, Dutch, Danish, and Japanese.
The second one about Woman (Die Frau, La Femme) took place in 1968 and traveled to 261 museums in 36 countries. Henk Verburg points out that of the 236 participating photographers from 85 countries, a mere 10 percent were women (by contrast, The Family of Man had a percentage of 21%!)
The third World Exhibition of Photography in 1973 titled Towards paradise (Unterwegs zum Paradies) was shown in 367 museums in 51 countries, followed by The Children of this world (Die Kinder dieser Welt) in 1977, organised jointly by Stern and UNICEF. There were also follow-up publications, 3mal Weltausstellung der Photographie (1975) featuring photographs from the first three shows, and Panorama der Menschheit (1980), with images from the third and fourth editions.
