The Wall Street Journal’s in-house design team, led by Che Douglas, has launched WSJ Design, a behind-the-scenes chronicle of what makes wsj.com look and perform the way it does. This follows the launch of a major update to the iOS app, the company’s first digital product to introduce the triumvirate of Font Bureau’s Escrow and Frere-Jones Type’s Exchange and Retina—longtime mainstays of the print edition. WSJ Design’s titles and heads make good use of Escrow Banner Condensed (drawn by Richard Lipton), whose dramatic contrast nicely offsets Frere-Jones’ more sober Exchange, used for body text.
