Manoel de Oliveira’s Grande Plano retrospective

Manoel de Oliveira (1908–2015) was a Portuguese film-maker and screenwriter, with a deep connection with the city of Porto, where he lived and worked. The first retrospective of Manoel de Oliveira’s complete body of work happened there, during November and December of 2015, organised by the Porto City Hall, together with Serralves. During these two months his works were screened at several cinemas, with an overall of 38 sessions, presented by different speakers, who were somehow linked to Oliveira’s work. — And Atelier

For the event, Porto based studio And Atelier created a whole set (20 different ones) of striking posters structured in two halves: the top half changes for each movie with the name “Manoel” reacting to the featured image; the bottom part, displays the director’s portrait with his last name “de Oliveira”, its letters positioned in the same way on each poster. The deconstructed typographic composition is set with a bold weight of Grotzec Condensed from Feliciano Type Foundry, just like all other information on the posters.

Grotzec Condensed is also heavily used for the program booklet, where it is paired with Tiempos Text for body copy.
