Museum Folkwang is one of the most renowned German art museums with outstanding collections of 19th-century painting and sculpture, classical modernism, post-1945 art and photography, which since 1979 has existed as a separate department. In the summer of 2019 the museum’s old building reopened after being expanded with a design by architect David Chipperfield.
Marc Naroska was commissioned with the development of a new corporate identity at the beginning of the year. The first exhibition with the new look is the new presentation of the collection titled Neue Welten: Die Entdeckung der Sammlung (“New Worlds – Discovering the Collection”). The new look receives its recognizability through the idiosyncratic use of typography using Basetica (Medium), designed by Matthieu Cortat and distributed by 205TF, as a typographic backbone for printed matter from posters to exhibition design. For its logo, Museum Folkwang uses Minion, which is used as the only typeface family on the institution’s website.
