Garage Bultena, Usquert

Koloss (1923) was designed by Jakob Erbar (1878–1935) as a late extrabold display companion to his debut release Feder-Grotesk (1909). In case you wonder about the long gap, keep in mind that the world was devastated by a war between the two releases. While Feder-Grotesk was long forgotten and rediscovered only in the last decade – see Federo (2011), Sonrisa (2011), Romanovsky (2013) – Koloss enjoyed popularity in the post-metal type era, too. It was adopted for phototypesetting by Face and subsequently for dry-transfer lettering by Letraset. There are several digitizations. One of them is used in all caps for the sign of a garage in Usquert, a village in the Dutch province of Groningen.
