The Flanders Architectural Review N° 14, “When Attitudes Take Form”

Public interest in architecture and spatial issues has never been so high. The Flanders Architectural Review N°14 presents striking architecture from Flanders and Brussels. “Wanneer attitudes vorm krijgen” (Dutch edition) / “When Attitudes Take Form” (English edition) assembles a broad range of recently completed architectural projects and situates them in the evolution of the socio-cultural domain in which they arose.

Designers Ward Heirwegh and Marie Sledsens paired the excellent Söhne (Kris Sowersby) with Freight Text (Joshua Darden). Two well balanced typefaces coming from opposite directions and complementing each other nicely. The curvature of Freight next to the strictness of Söhne felt as the perfect pallet to structure the different thematics of the publication. The 324 page publication leans heavily on the structure of the contents, which are reflected in the type choices and page grids. The project files mainly use Söhne and Söhne Mono while the essays lean heavily on Freight, with Söhne making a guest appearance taking care of headlines and footnotes.

The key concept for the selection of these projects is encapsulated in the title: When Attitudes Take Form. The editors chose architecture that demonstrates a convincing social commitment while also challenging and questioning its own discipline. These fifty projects display the multifaceted nature of the resulting architecture.
