.ITC Avant Garde Gothic is used with many of its characteristic alternates for the jackets of a series of chess books, including two by Siegbert Tarrasch (1862–1934), published by Edition Olms in Zürich in the early 1980s.
While the earliest jacket design for the book about he Karlsbad 1929 tournament (1981) alternates between left- and right-leaning forms for A, the later ones exclusively use the right-leaning glyphs (for A/Ä, M, v/V, w/W), for a more harmonic look. The diagonal aspect is further dialed up by the use of the e with angled bar.
