First cast by Stempel in 1948 after designs by Gudrun Zapf-von
Hesse, with Diotima-Kursiv added in 1950, and the open
Smaragd in 1954. [Musterkartei DIN 16507] The italic
was designed as early as 1939. Its roots had been a calligraphic
sheet made by Gudrun Zapf von Hesse with the texts of “Hyperion to
Diotima” by Friedrich Hölderlin. Released in 1951–53 [Linotype]
A
Stempel ad from 1958 mentions both Diotima and
Smaragd were released in 1953. Already used in two
award-winning books by the Trajanus-Presse before the full range of
sizes was completed. [Stempel
ad, 1954]. Ariadne (1954) is a set of swash
