In 1944, IBM introduced a version of the Selectric that could type proportional characters. Strangely, it never took off. Perhaps because like an iMac in a Windows shop, it wouldn't have been compatible with the monospaced workflow of the day (forms and whatnot).
I've never seen one. But a couple weeks ago I was in a beachfront restaurant in Malibu with framed letters from celebrities of yore. One of them, from the ’50s, was clearly made on a proportionally-spaced typewriter. The author: J. Edgar Hoover.
