All Black Digital

Power Grotesk in use for All Black Digital, a project by DJ and producer Carl Craig in collaboration with Beatport and Bridges for Music. From designer Alland Byao:

Carl Craig had a vision for Black History Month called All Black Digital, and it was an incredible honor to bring the visual side of this to life. Beatport and Bridges for Music will stream and promote a series of conversations on topics ranging from his own Planet E label to Afrofuturism, culminating in a live DJ stream from South Africa in partnership with the mighty Quincy Jones’ own SVOD Qwest.

For this unique project I’ve created hand-painted, unique art to meet bold type and clean layout. The original artwork is gritty but the details found in the super high resolution scans evoke visions of outer space. The contrast between abstract art and tightly structured layout takes us to a place where human soul and creativity meet digital life and technology.

Each painting is its own place and time in space. Each week’s stream will have a unique piece of hand-painted art and still feel like a cohesive, singular universe.
For the typography, I have worked with the beautiful Power Grotesk by Power Type Foundry.
