Nearly all these fonts were bundled with the Mac in the mid-1990s, which leads me to speculate that the artist made these choices on his own.
This seems to me a common case of an artist taking on the task of type selection and typography when that is not his specialty, maybe not even knowing there are such people as typographers who could have helped him see his vision through. I see it a lot in the US: otherwise talented artists or architects who assume they know enough about type to do it themselves.
BTW, that Longfellow font is New York! Haven’t seen that one in a while.
