First shown in a specimen dated 1817, initially in caps only. [Gray] Several large sizes appeared in Figgins’ 1821 specimen (used for sample). Widely considered to be the first examples of slab serif type.
Known in Germany as Breite fette Egyptienne (Bauer 1854, Stempel, Schelter & Giesecke). Fette Egyptienne (AG für Schriftgießerei, John) is very similar, too. [Seemann]
