Designed by Joseph Churchward, beginning in 1970. Expanded with
many weights, multiline variations, and shadow effects. Leaflets by
Churchward International Typefaces Ltd. show 34 variants in ca.
1972 and 54 variants in ca. 1974. A list compiled by Churchward in
2008 has 76 styles. [Bennewith] Named
Churchward Design 70 by distributor Berthold
Fototypes, probably to distinguish it from Churchward
69. Berthold carried 22 (E1, 1974) and
later 26 styles (E3, 1982). Mecanorma’s version
spanned two weights and was initially named Galaxy
[Ariadne,
1971] and later just Churchward. See also the separate

BluHead Studio has released a digital family called Churchward Design (2007) in 9 styles, but it differs in many ways from the original, especially in the widths of various letters. It also lacks the original’s ultra tight spacing. Many of the wilder variants remain relegated to film. Jordan Davies made an uncredited digitization of the Ultrabold as Churchward (Wooden Type Fonts, 2018).
