Origin unclear. This series was cast by the Poppelbaum foundry in Vienna before 1926 as Blockschrift or Block, in at least four styles; schmal (in-house, 1920), fett, Kursiv, and licht. The schmal and fett were also available in Cyrillic versions. [Seemann] Compared to Berthold’s Block, Poppelbaum’s schmal is lighter than the schmal and eng styles, and the fett is rounder than Reklameschrift Block.

Versions of the fett were also cast by Brendler (as Blockschrift), Warnery (as Mammouth noir), Schriftguss (Nero, before 1914) [Reichardt] and Zanker. [Th. Maier] Fondografica had the schmal as Modena and the fett as Bologna (before 1926 [Reichardt]). Reggiani had the schmal as Sansone and the fett as Nerone. [1937 specimen] Lichte Block (inline, also by Warnery as Mammouth clair; not identical to Poppelbaum’s licht) and the heavier Werbeblock (also by Warnery as Mastodonte) are two all-caps variants cast by Brendler.
