American Football — American Football (1999)
From small town Urbana, Illinois came American Football, the rock trio that fused precise math rock with compassionate emo, etching themselves in the soul of a generation. During their original stint in the late ’90s, they only released a single self-titled album, filled with suggestive tales of growing up and apart.
The album cover has since become a cult image in the scene, with its broken letterspacing and endlessly mysterious image of the house. Curiously the text is set in Imago, a relatively obscure neo-grotesk released by Berthold in the early ’80s. The band would employ the same setting and vibe with their post-reunion follow up album in 2016.
