Black Alibi by acclaimed crime writer Cornell Woolrich (1903–1968) was first published in 1942. The cover of this 1965 paperback edition by Collier uses Benguiat Newlock Condensed. The cover illustration is by Dick Cuffari (1925–1978).

    Similar letterforms can be found on the cover of another pulp novel published in 1959. Those are not from Benguiat Newlock, though – this face didn’t exist yet in 1959, nor from its precursor Benguiat Interlock: the slight difference between repeating letters reveal that they were custom drawn.
