In this book, Grigory Kanovich talks about Jewish life in Lithuania during interwar as he knew it from his childhood. He shows the shtetl as it is torn apart by poverty and conflicting ideologies, and eventually destroyed by the war. The trilogy begins with the youth of the impoverished hero, who becomes a gravedigger, and ends during the Holocaust, as he takes part in the resistance.

    Illustrated by Adasa Skliutauskaitė.

    1. Tomas employed both Tyfa Antiqua and the sturdier Tyfa Text. Read more about Storm Type’s reprise of the Czech classic on the typeface page.

He cleverly used the advantages of FM screening for a subtle gradient effect: Across the book, several blue blots interfere with the otherwise black text and bring a pleasing vitality to the page.
