Art direction by Ed Thrasher, featuring Hess Neobold, originally designed by Sol Hess for Lanston Monotype in 1933. This is probably VGC’s version for the Photo Typositor, slightly condensed. The exclamation mark is from a different source – maybe a squeezed Pistilli Roman?
It’s odd how much Neobold’s minimal wedge serifs look like the crotches added onto phototypesetting friskets to prevent image erosion. If I didn’t know it predated phototypesetting I’d have wondered if it was taking that feature and deliberately exaggerating it into being an obvious part of the letterform.
