Founded in 1972 by Gerhard Rubow and Rudolf Weber as URW – Unternehmensberatung Rubow Weber. Later joined by Peter Karow, inventor of Ikarus. Pioneered digital type and offered digitization services to many others, incl. IBM, Siemens, Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Linotype, Monotype, Rudolf Hell, ITC, and Letraset.
URW++ is the successor company founded by Svend Bang, Hans-Jochen Lau, Peter Rosenfeld, and Jürgen Willrodt after URW’s bankruptcy in 1995. Sold to Global Graphics in 2016 and renamed to URW Type Foundry in 2018. Acquired by Monotype in 2020.
